  • Limit exposure to salt water and chlorine, which can affect the life of your tan
Are there ways to enhance the Mystic Tan results?
To achieve the perfect sunless tan you should always follow two simple steps: Exfoliate and Hydrate. Follow these two steps the day of or the night before you tan:

Step 1.
Exfoliate your skin in bath or shower by massaging an exfoliant gel onto the skin with a washcloth or sponge. Concentrate on rough areas such as elbows, knees and ankles, then rinse clean. This removal of dead skin cells will give you a fresh, even surface to tan, which will increase the life and evenness of your Mystic Tan. Try MysticReady™ Exfoliating Body Wash

Step 2.
Always hydrate your skin after exfoliation by using a moisturizing lotion. Applying lotion in between your Mystic Tan sessions will increase the life and luster of your tan. Avoid using lotion directly after your Mystic Tan session.

What should I wear in the Mystic Tan Booth?
Most people wear nothing. However, if you’d be more comfortable wearing a bathing suit or underwear, be aware that the Tanning Myst may stain it. The Insta-Color Bronzer™ we use in our BronzMyst™ is water-soluble and should wash out.

What happens if the Mystic Tan Myst gets in my eyes?
Mystic Tan Tanning Myst has been thoroughly tested by a third-party lab, and the results showed no eye or skin irritation. Mystic Tan Tanning Myst has been used in over 15 million tanning sessions with no adverse reactions.

What happens if I inhale any of the Mystic Tan Tanning Myst?
While no one should purposely inhale or ingest the Mystic Tan Myst, it is known that DHA (the active tanning ingredient) is a non-hazardous compound that causes no adverse reaction in moderate quantities when applied topically or even ingested. DHA has been used as a diet supplement in sports nutrition and is non-carcinogenic. Testing has further shown that DHA is less toxic than aspirin, caffeine and even common table salt. Based on our research, the maximum amount of DHA that could accidentally be ingested or breathed during a one minute Mystic Tan sunless tanning session would be .05 milligrams (equivalent to less than one grain of common table salt). Ingesting this minimal amount of DHA should pose no health risk to the consumer.

Should I cover my hair while tanning in the Mystic Tan tanning booth?
Many customers wear a disposable shower cap, provided by the salon, to keep Tanning Myst from getting into their hair. Other customers tan without covering their hair. The Mystic Tan Tanning Myst does not penetrate the hair follicle. The Insta-Color Bronzer™ we use in our BronzMyst™ is water-soluble and will easily wash out.

Are there any optional precautions I can use with the Mystic Tan booth?
When applying DHA sunless products in a spray or mist, it may be difficult to avoid exposure to eyes, lips or guard against accidental inhalation of the Tanning Myst. Mystic Tan, Inc. and the FDA recommend that users cover the area of the eyes with standard UV tanning eyewear, protect the lips with lip balm, and use a nose filter to protect membranes in the nasal passages, as well as avoid inhaling or ingesting the product.

How do I towel off after my Mystic Tan session?
The Tanning Myst applied in the Mystic Tan tanning booth is moist and very fine. Your skin will feel hydrated and nourished. Tiny droplets remaining on your arms or legs after the session are easily removed by toweling dry. Toweling won't streak your tan, and any Tanning Myst that wipes onto the towel is excess and will not affect your tan. Just towel off the same way you do when you take a shower and then get dressed.

How quickly can I get dressed after a Mystic Tan tanning session?
Once you've towel dried, there's little chance of any bronzer or DHA getting on your clothes. If you perspire soon after your Mystic Tan tanning session, some of the bronzer may transfer to your clothing. Since the bronzer is completely water-soluble, it will wash out.

How long should I wait after a tanning session before showering? To give the DHA enough time to fully set, we recommend waiting a minimum of 4 hours after tanning. Showering sooner may diminish the intensity of the tan. If you tanned using BronzMyst, the Insta-Color Bronzer will wash off in the shower, but the DHA that creates your longer-lasting tan will remain.

Does Mystic Tan Tanning Myst have any smell after contact with my skin?
Some people notice a slight starchy smell on their skin a few hours after a tanning session. This is simply the DHA reacting to proteins in your skin and it fades away fairly quickly.

Will swimming affect my tan?
Swimming in chlorinated water or salt water can fade the Mystic Tan results, cause possible streaking and will diminish the length of your tan. However, normal activities such as bathing, showering or physical activities will not affect the quality of the tan.

What is Mystic Tan?

Mystic Tan creates an even, natural looking UV-free tan in less than a minute through its patented MagneTanTM technology. The Mystic TanTM booth sprays an ultra fine mist of Aloe Vera-enriched sunless tanning solution and quick-start bronzers. When the solution passes through the booth’s nozzles, it is polarized, taking on the characteristics of tiny magnets. The MagneTan technology then uses the body’s own magnetic properties to attract the solution to all exposed surfaces of the skin. The tan begins to darken about four hours after the session and reaches its peak color within about 24 hours.

Explain how MagneTan works for me.

The Mystic Tan solution is polarized negatively, so when it is sprayed toward the human body, which is neutral, the solution is attracted to the body, much the same way that a balloon with static electricity will attract to a wall. The MagneTan technology ensures a very even tan because the solution is attracted around the tanner, which means that the sides of the body are also evenly tanned.

How long does it last?
Mystic Tan begins to fade after about four or five days, or until the skin naturally exfoliates.

So, will Mystic Tan turn the skin orange like lotions tend to do?
No. The problem with sunless tanning lotions is the application. It’s hard to apply the right amount and do it without any streaking. Mystic Tan’s MagneTan technology assures that all areas of the body get a uniform coating of just the right amount of self tanner to produce an even, natural-looking tan.

Will Mystic Tan discolor fingernails?
No. We provide a barrier cream that tanners put on their palms, fingernails, and feet (should they choose) before entering the Mystic Tan booth. The cream blocks the Mystic Tan solution from those areas.

Does Mystic Tan provide protection from the sun?
Because Mystic Tan is completely UV free, it doesn’t provide any protection from the sun the way a melanin tan will.

Who should use Mystic Tan?
Everyone. We have customers who use Mystic Tan to get a quick tan before a big event, such as a party or wedding; customers who use it to enhance their current tan; customers who have hard-to-tan skin; and customers who want a tan but don’t want to use the conventional tanning beds.

Is Mystic Tan safe?
All of the components of Mystic Tan have been used in food and/or cosmetics for decades. The Mystic Tan solution contains more than 65 percent Aloe Vera, which moisturizes the skin. The self-tanning element, DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is used in virtually all sunless tanning creams and lotions. We do tell people not to use Mystic Tan if they have ever had an allergic reaction to self tanners. We encourage those people to test the solution on a small area of skin before doing a complete session. Since Mystic Tan was introduced in 1998, well over 1 million sessions have been completed, and the company has not had any reports of allergic reactions.

Do you have any tips for getting the perfect Mystic Tan?
Mystic Tan works best if you exfoliate and moisturize first, and it will last longer if you moisturize the skin frequently, beginning about six hours after the session.

Will the Mystic Tan solution get in the hair?
We provide a cap to wear over the hair. However, the solution does not penetrate hair follicles, so it won’t stain hair if the cap is not used or hair is exposed.

What do people wear?
Most people don’t wear anything. The Mystic Tan room, just like our other tanning rooms, is completely private.

What’s the difference between a bronzer and a self tanner?
A bronzer is a cosmetic dye designed to give an instant tan. It is water soluble and will wash off in a shower or bath.

The self tanner, in this case the DHA, reacts with the proteins and amino acids in the skin’s top layer to form a golden brown color.

When was Mystic Tan developed?
Mystic Tan and MagneTan technology were developed by Troy Cooper, the president and CEO of Mystic Tan. The first booth was introduced in a salon in Dallas in 1998.
